God’s will is never arbitrary, or one amongst a variety of options—there being little difference in the alternatives. Of this position, it is imperative to be persuaded. He has a clear specific will for each of us—of that we can be certain.
It is only certainty of God’s will that will lead a young man to “stay the course” if the vows of his marriage seem to have more worse than better, more sickness than health. Only certainty will help a Hudson Taylor, David Livingstone, or Jim Elliot to earnestly “maintain the course”, in their missionary calling.
It is only absolute certainty that will cause Jesus to: resolutely set out for Jerusalem, and the cross. Only total commitment to His Father’s specific will, could mean that he endured the cross, scorning its shame.
God’s will is sovereign, but He does not impose it mechanically. He does not impose His will on anyone—but we may seek it—and that is precisely what prayer is all about, and it is premised upon our appreciation of Who He is, i.e. worship.
To know God’s will demands that we first know the God Whose will we seek.
It is premised upon a deep and meaningful personal relationship with Christ. That relationship is the result of the conversion experience in the first instance, and results in a life of growing into Christ’s likeness—the process of sanctification. The expression of that life is then found in true Christian worship:
Worship is:
- an appreciation of God for His Own sake,
- without regard to the circumstances,
- without regard to any benefits that I might derive from Him, and
- it is 24/7.
For example: Hezekiah receives a letter of threat from Sennacherib,
14 … and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth. [worship] 16Lord, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
(2 Kings 19:14-17, emphasis added).
Hezekiah knew his God, and worshipped Him. And God promised deliverance—His perfect will (detailed in 2 Kings19:20-34) :
35And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

God’s will is effected by God’s provision. 185,000 killed by the angel of the LORD.
