As He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experienced the most extreme stress imaginable. The prospect of an eternal relationship of perfect love within the trinity being ruptured in a moment in time—for our salvation—is impossible for us to comprehend. And it is most unlikely that Jesus was shrinking from the physical torture, emotional stress, and public humiliation of the Roman cross.
Luke’s account highlights the intensity of Jesus’ agony:
44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Luke 22:44, emphasis added.
- “great drops of blood”. There is a possible explanation in the literature where there is a documented condition called Hematohidrosis, or Hematidrosis.
Hematidrosis is a condition in which capillary blood vessels that feed the sweat glands rupture, causing them to exude blood, occurring under conditions of extreme physical or emotional stress. Severe mental anxiety activates the sympathetic nervous system to … such a degree as to cause haemorrhage of the vessels supplying the sweat glands.
Hematohidrosis.
Irrespective of the explanation, Jesus suffered the most severe torture in body, mind and spirit ever imaginable—and more. We cannot remotely start to appreciate the enormity of this broken relationship.
As He hung on the cross, He uttered what is referred to as the “cry of dereliction”. This was the climax of the darkest period in history. The occurrence of spiritual death:
46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
Matthew 27:46, emphasis added.
This was the precise moment of our salvation being achieved—on the cross—before Jesus died physically.
This focus of the redemptive program, had been in the mind of God before the creation, and threatened the perfect relationship of unity within the godhead, that had never been previously under attack. For us.
We stand in amazement and deep gratitude.
